Overview
Red clover is a short-lived (2-5 years) tap-rooted perennial legume that fixes 70-150 lb Nitrogen per acre per year, mobilizes soil phosphorus and penetrates hardpan. Good as a cover crop or forage. Growing red clover + grass for one to three years restores soil that has become "tired" from intensive cultivation, building organic matter, tilth and fertility while suppressing weeds. Clover can also be overseeded into corn, vegetables or row crops when the latter are at mid-growth.
Seeding Rate
Plant red clover 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep in early spring or late summer at 8 - 12 lb per acre (3 oz per 1,000 sq ft), frostseed into pastures or existing grass cover crop stands at 6 - 8 lb per acre if seeding for the first time or if seeded every other year or 3 - 4 lb per acre if seeded every year, or at half the normal recommended rate with oats, ryegrass,
